Boys, Soldiers, Engagements, and wars

So, I'm back now. The rest of the weekend was fine. The Date with dreamboy ended up being kind of a drunk date. I think that Hyde said it perfectly: these internet dates are "just shopping." I need real world dates. Thanks for your perspective Mr. Mystic. I like the real world dating world better anyway. Internet dates are so false.

Ok, I wanted to say that one of my exes--Lanky--got engaged to the girl he started dating after I broke up with him in college. He was very sweet but a little on the whiney side for me. Smart guy, for business etc, but he always very very sweetly tried to be smarter in philosophy on account of little old me :(

Anyways, I saw him a few years back and he was still dating the girl. He told me that he was on the brink of breaking up with her. Well, they got engaged! This is from their wedding page:

As Hyde can attest, he's hardly my "type" as we know it today! FYI, Hyde, Lanky was a semi-alternative version of the preppy guys I used to go for: then I met D and everything changed. I started liking the more "controlling" types. Anyways, I had heard that this girl was similar to me. A lot of my friends told me she was my "twin." Aside from her eyes, hair, and mayber her chin, I don't think she looks that much like me. As D said when he saw this picture, "Nah, she's too dumb through the eyes." (Brutal, I know, but D is pretty brutal sometimes.)

Punchline to the story: THEY BROKE OFF THE ENGAGEMENT! That's right, I just heard today. Phew, one less divorce in America I guess.

OK, enough trivia for one evening. I'm off to try and understand what really happened in the Algerian War. The author of the book I'm reading posed some serious questions about the situation as it was unfolding, way back in 1955:
"Why is it that all of a sudden an entire population recognizes the existence of a sizeable rift and makes it even larger?" [He's referring to the Algerian separatists in this case.]

Another quote that I really liked from Mouloud Feraoun's journal:
"What should we have done to get along with one another? First of all, get to know one another....But we have not done this. Ask any Kabyle woman for her definition of a Frenchman. She will answer that he is a nonbelieve, a man who is often handsome and strong but heartless... How does a European define a native? A common laborer, a maid. A bizarre creature with ridiculous customs, peculiar dress, and an impossible language. ... It is almost childish to resort to these clichés so quicklyl. But this is the source of injustice, and it is uselss to look elsewhere. We have been co-existing for a century without the slightest curiosity. The only thing left to do is to harvest this mutual indifference that is the opposite of love."

I reckon that the above quote is proof positive that wars happen due to cultural considerations and relations between so-called ordinary people within a country. Wars do happen because of social injustices that can be sensed on a mass scale. It's rough.

But I digress.

Comments:
I like your title and your new look! Yes, I am here to attest that I wouldn't think Lanky to be your type. I agree with D-- you have the look of a smart girl. I don't think that girl looks like your "twin" at all.

I agree with the quote that indifference is the opposite of love. Like I said last night-- love and hate are frequently tangled up, but indifference is maddening to me.

:)

PS: "Controlling" is okay, but Wizard-scale controlling = bad. Be careful...

That's one diverse post there girl!
Good work, Hammer!
